Débora Carmo

   Débora Carmo holds a degree in Marine Biology by the Faculty of Science and Technology of Algarve University (PT). She is currently in the last year of a master’s degree in Ecology, at Coimbra University (PT). Following a passion for marine wildlife and statistics, her main research interest is the ecological modelling of marine ecosystems. 

   At the moment she is studying the biomass of cephalopods in the Southern Ocean and their role in the food webs, in collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey (UK). She was also a student at the University Centre in Svalbard (NO), where she had the opportunity to work with Arctic seabirds, at a latitude of 78ºN.

   Besides polar science, she was a volunteer for many years at the Algarve’s Life Science Centre and a coordinator of Straw Patrol, where she arranged and participated in school lectures, beach clean-ups and science events. 

   Débora Carmo became a member of the Executive Committee of APECS Portugal in January 2022. She is a representative of the National Committee in APECS International since October 2022.
