It is with great pride that we present the 15th edition of the APECS Portugal Workshop: “The Polar Express to Success: Enhancing ECRs’ Writing Skills”. The workshop will take place on October 24, 2024, at the Auditório das Portas de Santo António, Almeida, Guarda.

   This year we will address the importance of ECRs to acquire essential skills and techniques for writing effective and compelling project and funding proposals, focusing on practical tips during the different sessions.

Invited speakers

Catarina Frazão

Dr. Catarina Frazão Santos is an Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Lisbon (Department of Animal Biology, MARE/ARNET, Ciências ULisboa), Honorary Research Associate at the University of Oxford (School of Geography and the Environment), and European Research Council Awardee (ERC Starting Grant, PLAnT “Planning for sustainable ocean use in Antarctica under global change”). Her research focuses primarily on the challenges of developing sustainable ocean planning and governance under global environmental and social change. Her publications have appeared in Science and several Nature journals. She is founding Editor-in-Chief of the Nature npj Ocean Sustainability journal, and over the past few years has been actively supportting the European Commission, UNESCO and the World Bank as a senior consultant on MSP-related topics. She holds a PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of Lisbon (co-directed by Duke University) and has a background in marine biology and environmental management.

José Xavier

José Xavier (Cambridge University, PhD) is based at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and at the British Antarctic Survey (UK), focusing on Oceans research, Climate change, Policy making and Education and Outreach. José is member in various Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) advisory and expert groups related to science and education, including in the Scientific Committee of ICED (Integrating Climate and Ecosystems Dynamics in the Southern Ocean) program and SCAR EGBAMM. Still active with APECS, as member of the APECS Advisory Committee. José is the Head of the Delegation of Portugal at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM) and the youngest scientist to be awarded the prestigious Marta T. Muse award for his substantial contribution to Antarctic science and policy.
